Necker Island 2013 Remembered

It’s the night before I leave for our next Maverick IMPACT trip to Haiti – which is pretty close to a 180-degree shift from my last destination with the Mavericks. We just got back from Sir Richard Branson’s personal island in the BVIs, known as Necker Island.
It’s truly hard to describe the place…
My first year being there, I had called my wife Missy to tell her how amazing and wonderful this place was. She told me she’d been to other tropical spots so what’s the big deal? Well…it’s hard to describe unless you’ve been there. Quite frankly, it almost ruins any other type of trip. (Missy and I are still going through a little bit of post-Necker depression)
My daughter Zoe asked me about how many businesses Richard had. I told her 300, to which her reply was classic, “It’s ok Daddy. You have 5 so you are doing pretty good.”
I was really excited to be able to “share” Necker with a lot more Mavericks this year. We also had a blast at our first (hopefully annual) Necker Beach party. Here are a few pics of the action:
The Mavericks were there in full force along with the BBG Crew (you have to find someone who knows what BBG means!)
Each trip has been more incredible than the last; conversations have gotten deeper and more meaningful. It’s gone from ‘here’s the latest tactic’ to ‘here’s what really matters in your business and your life.’
It’s amazing to think that a few years back I wrote on my Ultimate Life List: ‘Have lunch with Richard Branson’. That has turned into my spending 5 weeks of extended amounts of time with the Virgin billionaire. It has also become an annual trek my family has experienced with me 3 times now. An extra bonus is that we’ve spent the night in Richard’s house the last 2 years.

Side note: We’re working on coming up with a cool way to compile Mavericks’ Life List items so we can work on knocking them out together.
To have Zack (7 ½) and Zoe (5 ½) experience this for 3 years now has been really interesting. One of my mentors, Dan Sullivan from Strategic Coach, says it’s important to make the extraordinary normal to yourself so you can achieve the extraordinary because it’s normal.
I love the fact our kids along with John Carter’s (Maverick #28) brood ambushed Richard at lunch one day with water balloons and pistols. And even better to see Richard throw glasses of water over his shoulder right back at them to surprise the kids. We have a great video of that on my personal Facebook page. You know normal stuff like this.
Even better was having the kids write out their own Life List on the airplane home. Part of Zack’s list included:
- Be in the NHL
- Own an NHL team
- Own an Island
Now that’s cool!
