Haiti 2012 report, Yanik’s top book picks,”The Art of Deadly Persuasion” and more…
Hey Mavericks!
I’m writing this coming up on the eve of Underground® 8 so will keep it short and sweet:
Looking forward to seeing a large group of Mavericks again at the event, and for the special Pre-Day LEAP event discussing 3 major trends you should be aware of. (And if you’re not there – you’re missing out.)
We just got back from our annual Maverick IMPACT Haiti experience with real estate rock czar, Frank McKinney. Once again Maverick1000 Member #35 Doug Doebler, did an amazing job selling out this experience.
Looking at my journal entries from the tri, there were a few standout points. First, the whole energy felt different in Port au Prince from a year before. Our guide Scott Bonnel from Hope to Haiti told us last year there were 1.5M people in the streets – and this year they have placed 1 million of them. Big, big difference. You can see it in the streets, which used to be marred with tents and chaos. Yes, there was still chaos (as compared to our cities), but it seemed more like the regular ordered chaos.
Each time I go to Haiti I appreciate the natural beauty of the island and the remarkable people who are so proud, happy and resilient. My intention each time is that the right Mavericks will be attracted and that we help create some sort of ripple. (That’s part of the Maverick DNA.)
From the previous trip, I learned M1000 Member #16, Jim Spano donated an entire container of solar panels, M1000 Member #98 Scott Marlow funded a water tower, and an anonymous Maverick donor paid to build the entire second story of an orphanage we visited.
Here are the Maverick members with a check for over $89,000+ raised for Caring House:
A big shout-out goes out to Maverick1000 Member #1 Mike Filsaime…
Mike created a product launch that generated over $25k in donations. And this check also represents donations from our M3 Summit when Frank spoke. Thank you everyone!
One of the key areas I’m most excited about there is micro-enterprise…
We held a “Haiti Shark Tank” event to fund a few promising enterprises, and we have high hopes for some of the budding entrepreneurs who came in. But there’s more. For instance, Scott Marlow’s funding of the water tower pays for Hope to Haiti to sell water, and thus creates a self-sustaining model in the community. In fact, the biggest goal I have for our continued involvement is to find ways to increase the self-sustaining, profitable micro-enterprises already under the Hope to Haiti umbrella (like the water), and make them cover 100% of the services provided.
At the conclusion of the experience, each person got a chance to talk about what the experience meant to them. Words like ‘humbled’ and ‘appreciative’ were some of the big ones; and in closing Frank had one of my favorite quotes I wrote down:
“We must be careful not to weaken the strong in order to strengthen the weak.”
I take that to mean it’s our job to continue being extraordinary and creating extraordinary wealth… so we can have extraordinary impact.
And perhaps just as powerful, a quote came from one of our newest Maverick members, M1000 Member #124 Maceo Jourdan, who said, “Never play quarters with Yanik.”
That’s what another NEW Maverick member and Canadian real estate investor, Maverick1000 Member #125 Steve Martell, found out for himself..
Though we didn’t play with a quarter, we managed to find the local currency, the “goud,” would work in a pinch. When you meet Steve at a Maverick event, ask him how much he “hearts” Yanik while signing “Oh Canada.” Here’s a little “action” shot of Steve at the airport (so cute):
Maverick Business Reads
I typically read about a book a week, and from time to time will share some of the gems with you.
#1: Abundance by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler
Peter is head of the X-Prize Foundation, and the guy responsible for really helping propel the commercial space industry. Peter is a very big thinker and someone I admire. (We actually had Peter as a past participating Maverick icon for a Zero-Gravity trip.) This book has some pretty startling concepts about how the multipliers of exponential technology can help alleviate some of the biggest problems we are facing as a planet. You can see a pretty awesome presentation on the topic here, from M1000 Member #8 Joe Polish’s 25k Group here: http://www.getabundance.com/presentation.php
#2: Shine by Dr. Ned Hollowell
I shared the stage with Ned a little while ago for a high-level CEO group retreat, and I loved his message then about ADHD not being a disorder but a blessing. I mean, how many entrepreneurs do you know who have ADHD? (I do!) Shine is about proven science to get peak performance out of your team. Some really smart stuff in here and a semi-quick read…
#3: Emotional Equations by Chip Conley
We had Chip for our Maverick M3 Summit, who shared incredible info on how to tweak and tinker with your personal emotions—and how you “show up.” I finished it up a while ago, but it’s just really hitting bookshelves now and making a splash.
What are you reading that’s awesome right now?
Go ahead and post it inside the new and updated Maverick1000.net private network! You have been in there, right? It’s totally new and updated so make sure you take a peek.
Alright, I’ll be back with even more updates after Underground®. But one quick reminder about an upcoming experience:
