“I love to do things spontaneously. I remember waking at 2am one Sunday morning in Las Vegas and deciding on the spot to head to Europe. I left for the Airport at 6am fully ready to go!“
Welcome Paul! What businesses do you operate
My main business is called SMOOTH INC, which is primarily a manufacturer of cell phone accessories that we sell on Amazon.com, along with other products mostly manufactured in China. I also run a China Sourcing trip (next trip scheduled for October 2014) and a proxy business for gamers called Smoothping.
Why did you become a member of Maverick1000 and why are you a good fit for the group?
The main reason I joined the Mavericks is the quality of the people who are already part of the group. I know 5-10 members already and they are quality/awesome people. I am a very social person that loves to have a good time, yet I like to work hard and I am building a strong business with a core focus on my employee family.
Super Hero Skills?
From a business perspective, I have a very strong knowledge of sourcing/buying products from China and selling on Amazon. From a personal perspective, my experience in the Mankind Project has taught me how to be part of something bigger than myself and to give back and help others.
What top things would you like to gain / learn / do with other Mavericks, and what unique value do you bring to the group?
I am big into adventure. I want to travel the world (I already travel a lot) and go to some exciting places (like Necker island!) I also want to be part of the sharing/caring nature and give back (pay forward) to others. I am also very interested in partnering in business with other Mavericks and sharing my experience of selling physical products.
What is the most “Maverick” thing you have ever done?
I love to do things spontaneously. I remember waking at 2am one Sunday morning in Las Vegas and deciding on the spot to head to Europe. I left for the Airport at 6am fully ready to go!
I also booked my first trip to China (almost 8 years ago) on less than 1 weeks notice, and that involved heading to a Chinese embassy to get a Chinese Visa!
Tobogganing down the Great Wall of China without using brakes was also pretty Maverick (some would say pretty stupid =p)
What interests, activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
- I love driving fast (cars, go-karts)
- Cricket (yes, that funny game we play in Australia)
- I LOVE just lying on a beach and relaxing
What interests, activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
What’s the most significant / important contribution you’ve made to a community or nonprofit organization?
Which books, authors or programs have been a powerful influence in your business and life?
Richard Branson has been huge for me. I love his approach to business and life. I have modeled my company on his Virgin Group (All of my companies have the “SMOOTH” moniker.
I believe wholeheartedly that The Mankind Project is the reason I am a successful person in both business and life and understand the value of integrity and accountability.

“I’d like to learn what it’s like to fly with Eagles instead of Geese…“
Welcome Boyd! What businesses do you operate?
I am the Founder/Owner/President of TechKnowledgey, Inc: we provide on-site and cloud based IT services for businesses. Our specialties include Google Apps for Business, Network Services, and Managed Print Solutions. Our products and services scale allowing us to serve a wide variety of customers. Our smallest customers include solo-entrepreneurs and our largest customers include public schools and large financial institutions. Most of our customers are privately held businesses.
Why did you become a member of Maverick1000 and why are you a good fit for the group?
Maverick member #61 Mike Cline has been like a brother to me for a long time. Over the years he’d often talk about this great group of people called Mavericks. I’ve personally experienced how Maverick has helped him grow personally and professionally. Several years ago, I accepted his invitation to check out your Underground event. Even though I’m not an Internet Marketer, I enjoyed the leadership and entrepreneurial spirit of the group. I’ve attended three Undergrounds and the last one really clicked. I was in such a state of flow from all of the good people and good conversation. I wasn’t tired after only 4 hours sleep a night for 4 days. I really felt like I connected with the Maverick spirit and decided I’d like to include this energy as a permanent part of my life. The Maverick values of having fun, giving forward, and making more money agree with my core values. It was easy to get along with the group and I was able to give as well as receive while talking about life and business. So many times I feel like I have to dumb myself down to get along with the group. This was not the case with the Mavericks, in fact it was just the opposite. I’m looking forward to a group of people that have the freedom to be the best versions of themselves, and encourage others to do the same.
Super Hero Skills?
On a personal side, I’m a good big brother. Business owners and leaders come and talk to me when they need to sort out “life” and I’ve got a knack for helping them figure it out. I’m also a first generation entrepreneur with all of the grit and grime that comes from being the first one through the mud. As far as hard skills, even though my business is not an “Internet” business it does have many traits of one, including having high percentages of recurring revenue and a healthy dose of tech. I’m a tech guy who focuses on business operations instead of Internet Marketing. I’m solid in business fundamentals, save marketing. I’ve got a long track record in technical sales, which kinda makes me a Maverick among the marketing skill heavy mavericks… My company has expertise building business systems using Google Apps for Business and migrating Microsoft based software into the Cloud. The biggest fault my business has is that it’s smaller. Spending time with Mavericks just might be a good cure for that!
What top things would you like to gain / learn / do with other Mavericks, and what unique value do you bring to the group?
To start, I’d like to learn what it’s like to fly with Eagles instead of Geese. I want to have fun and do life with Eagles. I’d like to accelerate the process of taking my business form a brick and mortar locally focused company, to a company that does increasing Cloud based business on a nationwide scale. I’d like to take my entrepreneurial creativity to the next level. No later than 36 months from now I’d like to write a book, Evolved Eagles. To get this done I’ll need the right combination of freedom from my “day business,” and creative energy to turn my what’s in my spirit into a tool to help the Eagles of our world.
What interests, activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
I’m madly in love with my wife and kids. Krista and I have been married 15 years and we make play a regular part of our lives. I love being a dad and doing life with the kids. I love aviation and space technology and I’m a private pilot. I feel like the best version of myself when I’m in the cockpit. I enjoy fitness and run a couple of ½ marathons a year in addition to a normal keeping fit routine of running 10 miles a week along with some modest strength training. I enjoy tactical training and firearms. Several times a year I’ll attend classes on how to defend yourself and kill bad guys in addition to enjoying the active relaxation that comes from playing a “real first person shooter game” at the range.
What are the Top adventures/things on your Big Life List?
- Ride to space
- Build a self sustaining orphanage in South East Asia
- Pilot a fighter jet – Not be a passenger in a flight suit holding the stick for show.
What’s the most significant / important contribution you’ve made to a community or nonprofit organization?
I’ve been involved in my local community for a long time. Over the years I’ve served on the boards of Chamber of Commerce and Boys and Girls Club. One of the annual events that I organize is the Elkhart County 4H fair, which sounds kinda old time small town, but it’s the second largest event in the State of Indiana after the Indy 500. Specifically, I put on a parade that kicks off the event. In my small town of 30,000 people about 20K of them come out for it every year. It’s Main Street USA at it’s best. Internationally I’ve been part of an organization called Asia’s Hope which helps rescue orphan kids in Cambodia and Thailand. Every year I go over to check on the kids to make sure that all is well. I’m currently organizing a group of my business buddies to take a trip to figure out how to plant the seeds of viable, sustainable, economic enterprise so the kids have a bright economic future to look forward to as they grow up. I’m usually considered the “visionary, get it done” guy in community and nonprofit settings. My hope is that by joining Maverick I’ll have a community of people around me that will equip and encourage me to take things to the next level. They say charity starts at home. I’ve recently bought my largest giving forward effort to a close, and it failed. My in laws were unprepared for retirement, their only steady income was from “government assistance”. My wife and I tried to give them dignity and a better life by purchasing a condo for them, investing over $50K (which actually buys a nice 2 bedroom place in Goshen, IN) in a condo for them to live out their days. We bundled everything into the rent save food and medical so that we could keep an eye on them and simplify life to a level they could deal with. We consulted the family in the entire process. If they would have followed the plan they could have left a legacy of contributing towards something that would have helped their grandkids and they would have been in a place where my wife and I could have served as a buffer between them and the hard realities of life. Less than 18 months into it the family decided that living on complete “government assistance” in a HUD apartment was a better plan than capible family looking after them. I ended up losing tens of thousands on the deal. In addition to paying a very high price for a peaceful Christmas dinner I did a lot of reflection on the purpose of giving. My giving did not end up changing the situation. Looking back it was optimistic/foolish on my part to think that a dose of “smart” after 80+ years of living another way would change things. It made me reflect on the purpose of giving and the circumstances in which we should give. Couple of quick takeaways from that reflection. First, the Universe first presented itself to us as a creator. Creation in the service of others is one of the best ways that we can plug into this power. Two, giving should serve as a catalyst. The gift should speed things up and create at least the energy of the gift that was given. This “gift energy” is then available to be used again. This is sustainable giving that has the potential to change the world. Giving in it’s successes and failures has been one of life’s greatest teachers.
Which books, authors or programs have been a powerful influence in your business and life?
Wow, to narrow this down is hard! I’m an avid reader and a lifelong learner. EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey has been a major influence. I spent a week with Dave and his senior leadership team in 2011 and it was of enormous benefit to my business and personal life. Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not one of those, “we don’t smoke, and we don’t chew, and we don’t go with girls that do” Bible thumping assholes, but the Bible and the personal teachings of Jesus have had deep impact on the man that I am today. Tim Ferriss has also been an influence through his books. I’ve learned a lot from his philosophy of going after the life you want by paying attention to the “important details” at the expense of the trivial and living a fulfilling and healthy life.

“My brother recommended that I join so I could meet other people that should be institutionalized…”
Welcome Michael! What businesses do you operate?
Cromogen Biotechnology, a manufacturer of hemp food ingredients and cannabinoid-class molecular isolations for pharmaceutical research and the health supplement industry. We also developed a dosage-based inhalable product for the Health Canada Medical Marijuana Program (MMPR).
Why did you become a member of Maverick1000 and why are you a good fit for the group?
My brother recommended that I join so I could meet other people that should be institutionalized. Thank goodness for our ability to drive GDP growth! I think I’m a good fit here because I play well with others.
Super Hero Skills?
I can effectively grow cannabis magnitudes cheaper than any other company in the world and in far greater scale. Being involved with a high-value crop puts my company’s awareness on the forefront of industrial agricultural technology.
What top things would you like to gain / learn / do with other Mavericks, and what unique value do you bring to the group?
I would like to meet other enlightened individuals and have an outlet to “turn off” a few times a year. Over the past decade, I’ve found very unorthodox solutions to problems across a multitude of industries, which makes me valuable to any group whose success is centered around our abilities to solve new problems everyday.
What is the most “Maverick” thing you have ever done?
I rode a bicycle across Mexico in 3 weeks with zero prior training. Or Spanish.
What interests, activities or hobbies do you enjoy?
As far as sports go, I love to watch my San Francisco Giants. I enjoy skiing – racing downhill for half of my life. I was lucky enough to train with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell for a few years before his rise to greatness. When I’m not being active, there’s music in my life constantly. Live jazz, the symphony, or random Pandora stations, I love it all.
What are the Top adventures/things on your Big Life List?
-
Ring the opening bell on the NYSE
-
Take my father to the Maui Invitational NCAA Basketball Tournament
- Travel to Buenos Aires
What’s the most significant / important contribution you’ve made to a community or nonprofit organization?
I financed and oversaw the development of 250+ units for the homeless after I sold my last company Within two years, I grew an NPO from changing the lives of 250 people to over 500 annually. Also sequestering 80,000 metric tons of carbon this year. That’s a contribution, right (most definitely)?
Which books, authors or programs have been a powerful influence in your business and life?
Other than reading Double Double by Cameron Herold, being my father’s son was the best program one could ask for. He’s still coaches me in periods of high growth.
