Making a Difference the Maverick Way
Over the past couple of months, we have featured the involvement of several Maverick members in Non-profits and charitable causes. Please join me as we re-visit these “do-gooders” to see what’s new.
Maverick Member #16 James Spano
Please join me in giving a shout out for Maverick member #16 James Spano, Principal at RedStone Energy Group. A couple of months ago, James told us about how he has been working with the Haitian Health Foundation to raise money for a solar generation plant that will provide power to a hospital that is currently serving thousands of people living in Haiti. This is a cause that has deeply touched James and has moved him to act. James highlights his passion for the Haitian cause while offering an invitation for other Mavericks to get involved:
“Mavericks are more than a club, more than a network, and more than a bunch of wealthy business people. They are a group of caring, creative and philanthropic minded people that will no doubt leave a footprint in history that will act as an example of what can happen when great minds, good souls, and collective resources are applied unselfishly to the betterment of the human existence! Lets figure out how the Mavericks can create a legacy that will outlast all of us, and solving such an important issue as energy surety in the most remote poorest regions in the world is now truly possible. We are on the cutting edge technologically, and with God’s grace we are about to do something the world has only dreamed of since Edison first invented the light bulb! The Mavericks will be part of that story and for that I am truly thankful to Yanik and to Frank, as they have likely unknowingly been a true inspiration to me!”
Back in January of 2013, I featured an article about Swaziland Relief, an all volunteer, grassroots group hoping to make a significant difference in the lives of the people in Swaziland, Africa. Swaziland Relief is a partnership between Swazis and Americans to bring aid, relief, and hope to the orphans of Swaziland. Swaziland is a small, beautiful country located in southern Africa with an HIV prevalence rate of 42.6%, the highest in the world , a declining population, a life expectancy of 31 years, and 80,000 children orphaned by AIDS. I recently received the following email from Kenneth Stracuzzi, a Swaziland Relief supporter:
“Swaziland Relief is presently collecting clothing and food to fill a 40′ sea container that will ship in May 2013. We have a matching grant by one of your members, so all donations towards the 16K shipping cost will be doubled! See the attached pic of the sea container truckload and our friends receiving clothing last year.”
[Note from the editor Rose Ayers]: I have been following the progress of this project on the Swaziland Relief Facebook page. Below is a recent post that announces their progress”
“We have raised $10,875 of the $16,000 needed to ship the “Sea Container of Relief Supplies” to Africa. Wow, thank you for the generous donations which are being matched by a dollar for dollar grant…that means your gift is doubled!”
